He became close friends with the astronomy professor, Frederick Kaiser, and followed his lectures on theoretical astronomy with keen interest. Although he grew up in Protestant circles, he was a freethinker in religious matters he regularly attended the local French church to improve his French.īy the time Lorentz matriculated at the University of Leiden in 1870, his primary interests were mathematics and physics. He was unusually quick with foreign languages, inferring grammar and idiom from context. From an early age he was drawn to physical science, although he also read widely in Victorian novels and Reformation history. Lorentz attended primary and secondary schools in Arnhem and was always the first in his class. His mother, the former Geertruida van Ginkel, died when he was young and his father married Luberta Hupkes when the boy was nine. Lorentz, father, Gerrit Frederik Lorentz, owned a nursery near Arnhem.
